Blair, E. Yukihara, S. In contrast, previous work has shown that the SAR procedure can be used to correct for sensitivity changes exhibited by feldspars if the cutheat is equal to the pre-heat. In this paper, a procedure that corrects for sensitivity changes in both quartz and feldspar is tested. The results indicate that for sedimentary quartz the cutheat can be equal to the pre-heat. Thus, it may be possible to develop one procedure to measure equivalent doses in a polymineral sample. We also tested several different optical stimulation methods. Using the infrared IR -stimulated signal from a post-IR blue-stimulated optically stimulated luminescence sequence extends the potential age range when using feldpathic materials. This paper aims to provide an overview concerning the optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating method and its applications for geomorphological research in France. An outline of the general physical principles of luminescence dating is given. A case study of fluvial sands from the lower terrace of the Moselle valley is then presented to describe the range of field and laboratory procedures required for successful luminescence dating.

The Gyrtoni Fault, defines the north-eastern boundary of the Middle-Late Quaternary Tyrnavos Basin, and was previously investigated with geological methods. Twenty five fluvial-colluvial sediment and pottery samples were collected from two paleoseismological trenches, excavated along the Gyrtoni Fault, from both the upthrown and the downthrown fault blocks.

Investigations of luminescence characteristics using various tests confirmed the suitability of the material for OSL dating using the SAR protocol. Radioactivity measurements were performed in order to estimate the annual dose rate of the surrounding soils to which the quartz grains were submitted during the burial period of the collected samples. The estimated OSL ages agreed well with the available stratigraphical data, and archaeological evidence.

Scientists in North America first developed thermoluminescence dating of rock minerals in the s and s, and the University of Oxford, England first developed the thermoluminescence dating of fired ceramics in the s and s. During the s and s scientists at Simon Frasier University, Canada, developed standard thermoluminescence dating procedures used to date sediments. In , they also developed optically stimulated luminescence dating techniques, which use laser light, to date sediments.

The microscopic structure of some minerals and ceramics trap nuclear radioactive energy. This energy is in constant motion within the minerals or sherds. Most of the energy escapes as heat, but sometimes this energy separates electrons from the molecules that make up the minerals or ceramics.

Quartz crystals in clay, glass, burnt stone and sedimentary soils are made of lattice crystal structures which absorb radioactive electrons which become trapped in the lattice at a standard rate over time.

When an object is heated to high temperatures TL or exposed to sunlight OSL , particular types of electron trapping mechanism are set to zero. From then on, the rate of electron accumulation starts again and can be measured against the surrounding radioactivity of the soil which must also be sampled as a control — without this the techniques are much less accurate. The energy represented by the trapped electrons can be released and measured by heating in a laboratory, which produces a range of luminescent glows showing as light.

When detached from the ordinary glow of burning, these can be recorded and measured against a curve showing the levels of radioactivity present over the past 50, years, although both techniques are more accurate for the past 10, years. Even so, for the past years they are less accurate than radiocarbon dating. TL is very good for dating ceramics which exceed in age the current range of radiocarbon, and OSL can measure the point when layers were covered by silting or deposition, allowing the date of structures to be measured by measuring the last exposure of the underlying soil.

In the last few decades optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating has become an important tool in geochronological studies. The great advantage of the method, i. This can result in a scattered distribution of equivalent doses DE , leading to incorrect estimation of the depositional age. Thoroughly tested protocols as well as good data analysis with adequate statistical methods are important to overcome this problem.

In this study, samples from young fluvial sand and flood plain deposits from the Elbe River in northern Germany were investigated to compare its depositional ages from different age models with well-known historical dates. The paleodose DP was calculated from the DE data set using different approaches.

Optical dating techniques employ ubiquitous quartz or feldspar grains to directly date the deposition dating sedimentary units. As such, the optical dating methods allow the systematic chronological evaluation of Quaternary-age sedimentary sequences. In West Africa, preservation conditions of the sediments have only rarely been favorable to the recording of long sedimentary and archaeological sequences. Most of the artifacts are surface finds, making it difficult, if not impossible, to place them in chronological context, whether it be relative or absolute. However, in the Dogon Country, deep sedimentary deposits have been preserved in several sectors, trapping abundant evidence of human occupations during the Paleolithic and making it possible to study their chronology.

While the range of applicable dating methods is limited, given the exclusive preservation of mineral materials, with the exception of Holocene charcoals, conditions are favorable for dating by optically stimulated luminescence OSL : the sediments are mainly formed of quartz, which, moreover, has a particularly strong luminescence signal in this region. The radioactive elements of the uranium, thorium and potassium families are naturally present in very low amounts in all sediments.

Radioactive decay is accompanied by energy release, some of which is absorbed by nearby minerals. When these are subjected to light stimulus, the accumulated energy in the crystalline networks is released, causing a light emission: this is optically stimulated luminescence or OSL. When sediment is exposed to natural light prior to deposition, the OSL acquired over geological time is removed.

Luminescence characteristics of quartz from Brazilian sediments and constraints for OSL dating. This study analyzes the optically stimulated luminescence OSL characteristics of quartz grains from fluvial, eolian and shallow marine sands of northeastern and southeastern Brazil, with especial focus on the applicability of the single-aliquot regenerative dose SAR dating protocol. All analyzed Brazilian sediments presented relatively high OSL sensitivity and good behavior regarding their luminescence characteristics relevant for radiation dose estimation.

This article describes the principles of optical dating—an umbrella term for a family of related techniques based on the storage of radiation energy in light-sensitive traps in natural minerals—and its application to rock art. Only a few studies have used OSL or IRSL dating to constrain the age of rock paintings and engravings, and these applications can be grouped under two broad headings: dating of associated sediments and dating of rock surfaces.

These studies are briefly reviewed in this chapter, together with some comments on future directions and challenges for OSL and IRSL dating of rock art.
